Locals reach Pride of NZ finals
Six Nelsonians have been named as finalists in the South Island section of the Pride of New Zealand awards. Kyle Paki Paki, Philip Walker, Adam Black and Gary Miller were selected as finalists in the bravery and heroism category for their rescue of the Fa’ave family in July last year. Ian Price will battle two others for the Environment award, and Tama Easton and
Mark Janssen make up two of the three finalists in the fundraiser of the year category. The awards have been running over the past two months, searching for the country’s most inspiring stories. In Nelson, more than 20 people were nominated, with six making it to the South Island finals in Christchurch on August 7. Adam Black, who was nominated for his
bravery in Nelson, is from the UK. The South Island winners of each category will then go to the national finals in Auckland in early September, meeting winners of the three regions in the North Island. Kyle Paki Paki says he was “absolutely humbled” when he found out he had made the finals. “I keep saying that it’s something most people would do but it’s still nice to
be recognised.” He says he will be taking his mum with him to the dinner. “Mum was the first person I opened up to after the accident, so she knows what I’ve been through and she was the first person I thought of.” The awards are being run by the New Zealand Herald, TSB Bank, The Hits and in conjunction with Nelson Weekly.

Brook St resident Christine Horlemann said it took about “half an hour” just to get into the Queens Gardens and across the first bridge. “They should have run it for another two days. We’d never been before but just thought we’d go for the kids to look at something different.” Liz Reeve attended the free event after seeing it on TV, and despite saying organisers were struggling to cope with the demand, she thought it was neat. “It’s a bit of excitement for the kids. I’d definitely come again.” But some event goers weren’t so impressed
and vented their frustration on the Nelson Weekly Facebook page. “Total nightmare tonight, trying to get round with kiddies. Far too many people, we couldn’t get out of there fast enough!” said Summer Hebberd. Cheryl Remnant thought the venue was far too small for the crowd that attended and “got sick of being abused for trying to get around with stroller after all it was listed as a family event.” While Casey Brown thought it was a “waste of time” and left after 20 minutes of not getting anywhere. Light Nelson featured 40 installations from local and national artists, and in its second year organisers were hoping to top the crowd of 16,000 from last year. In future events, Brian says the intention is to create a promenade along the Maitai and extend the installations right into the city. “With the huge crowd we had last night we really need to make this happen soon.”

Twenty years ago there was just food (usually a can of Fido), vets bills and registration, but today dog owners are also spending money on dog groomers, walkers, trainers, whisperers, toys, clothing and expensive health foods. The New Zealand Companion Animal Council estimates that our country’s dog owners spend an average of $1047 each year on their dogs and that amount doesn’t surprise Town and Country vet Brenda Halliwell. “Everyone is busier rushing around after children and working and they still want the fun of having a pet,” Brenda says. “So what’s happening is that they are paying people to groom and walk their dogs so they don’t feel guilty about not doing it themselves.” Brenda says there’s also been an increase in popularity of small dog breeds that don’t shed hair and that’s increased the demand for dog groomers.

One Nelson church has been pulled down this week, while another has been farewelled. Unite Church on Rutherford St had its main building pulled down last week after it was deemed an earthquake risk a year ago. Minister Paul Burton says the church has been operating out of its older hall on the same site since the earthquake rating was confirmed. He says watching it come down wasn’t sad because the decision was made some time ago and there is a sense of excitement at what lies ahead. “Next step is where to? Hopefully, that means building something on site. There are pressures on space at the moment in our current buildings but there are big cost tags on building something new, as well,” he says. Just days before the Unite church came down, the Stoke Methodist Church on Neale Ave, had a “de-consecration ceremony” after it was sold

Presbyter Gary Glover says the building, which has served the congregation since 1965, was deemed an earthquake risk more than a year ago and they were ordered out of it by church authorities. Since then they’ve worshipped from various venues but most recently from St Andrews Presbyterian Church, also in Stoke. “They are a church without a minister and I’m a minister without a church,” says Gary. The cost of strengthening the building was out of range for the church, so it was decided to sell it and use the proceeds to redevelop its youth wing on the adjacent site, as a new parish. The massive stained glass window in the church will be removed and used in the new building, says Gary.

Southern Link ‘just a political promise’ A third arterial road from Stoke to Nelson city is “just a political promise”, says councillor Pete Rainey, and building the road is not back on the agenda. Nelson City councillors will meet this Thursday to discuss sending options for a Rocks Rd upgrade to the public for consultation. But it’s likely the conversation will swing to the southern arterial route, after the Prime Minister announced
funding for an investigation into the road last month. The two projects aren’t linked, but if the new road, dubbed the southern link, was to be built, it would mean the state highway would be moved from Rocks Rd to the new road. There had been rumours of some councillors attempting to add to this week’s meeting agenda and force a vote
on removing the protection of the railway reserve from Victory to Wakatu, where the road is proposed to go. But councillor Pete Rainey says that isn’t needed because the southern link isn’t on the agenda and he doubts it will be. “There’s been some talk in the community that the southern link is back on the agenda, well, that’s certainly not the case. [Just] because a local MP has made an
election… well, it’s a political promise and it doesn’t mean the road will go ahead.” Pete says there is a group of councillors who “remain to be convinced” that building a new highway through Victory is a good idea, but that it would only be tested by it being put on an agenda. “The talk that the southern link is back on the agenda isn’t substantiated by anything in front of council that I can see.”

Students get in on the Light Nelson fun Creative Industries student Cheri Thompson had to figure out how to suspend a giant spider web across the top of a stairwell in the Creative Industries building at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. The intricately-woven web is one of the works by NMIT students and staff which featured in the second Light Nelson festival over the weekend. As part of the community festival, the Creative Industries building came alive with brilliant light installations, both inside and out. About 40 students from the Bachelor of Arts and Media are involved - some working in small groups and others creating individual works. Last month, a ‘dry run’ was held to test out how the works would look, photograph them for assessment and iron out any issues. Creative Industries Tutor Kay van Dyk says it’s a great experience for students to be involved with. “Participating in a community event is an invaluable experience that students will gain a lot of learning from,” she says. The Level 5 (first year) students were given a fairly open brief of ‘lantern, light and shadow’ and

Photo: Phillip Rollo. had to stick to a budget of $20, while the second year students were given a theme of ‘habitat’ and had to use recycled materials. The light installation works vary from huge shadow projections to a giant mermaid, wrapped trees to a work featuring children’s clothing on a washing line – a commentary on children affected by war. Materials include everything from recycled wood to steel, chickenwire, bamboo and even sellotape. Not only have the students had to design and create their works within budget and to the brief, they’ve also had choose their sites, install the works, figure out how to
light them and comply with all health and safety requirements. Cheri Thompson, who is in her second year of a Bachelor of Arts and Media degree, says it’s been a “very challenging but also very cool” project to be a part of. She created her work using 300 metres of fluorescent builders’-string, weaving it, using a darning needle, in her back garden over several weeks. “With a spider’s web, every thread strengthens or weakens the one before and after it – just as everything that we do now reflects our past and future,” she says. The web was lit from underneath with fluorescent lighting.

The third annual Art Expo Nelson brought some of the best artisans out into one space, and the public responded by turning out in their thousands. Project manager Nic Foster says the quality of the work continues to reach new highs, and local attendee Maxine McNabb, agrees. “The talent has risen every year,” she says. From etchings to oils, and sculpture to fabrics, the different mediums made for an eclectic collection of the stunning talents. Contributor Jeff Connell says he tries to portray creativity when working on a new piece. “[I’m] always looking at light and landscape to have convincing spaces… a painting you can look into and, in your mind’s eye, move around inside it.” And as part of her creative process, Nelson artist Ruth Vaega says she spent hours observing a robin for one of her etchings.

Working with Nelson’s poorer families has been a passion for Penny Molnar and that work has been recognised with a nomination in the Pride of New Zealand Awards. Penny Molnar is the Victory Community Centre’s Be Well nurse. She’s paid for 30 hours of work per week. When her shift is up, she carries on working – uncontracted and unpaid. “We’ve always been on sunshine wages,” says Penny, 67, who has been nominated in the lifetime achievement category of the awards. “People want to live here because of the climate, but the wages are low for the cost of living here. A lot of jobs are seasonal in fish and horticulture. People want to come here, but once here, it's not the easiest.” Some of those people are refugees who struggle when in need of housing after they’ve had children, or when in need of more than basic healthcare. “A lot of clients are refugees. Often, after 2-3 years they still need support. If you’ve been in a refugee camp for 15 years, it’s hard to settle in.” The building is no more than three rooms attached to a school hall, but the centre’s really a collection of people. Penny’s contract is to deliver community-based services from the community centre.

Her contract says nothing about taking rubbish to the tip. “The most unexpected thing, I guess I do, is a neighbourly thing which a nurse wouldn’t be expected to do: I leave a trailer at people’s houses where rubbish is a problem. It’s expensive to go to the tip and they’ve been told by the landlord they must move it. I pick up the trailer and take it to the tip, maybe on my day off…. It’s neighbourly things others wouldn’t necessarily call professional. “During the recent flood, one family had to be evacuated. I found some toys and some cash so they could immediately get a change of clothes for the kids. It’s those little neighbourly gestures which blur the line between professional and neigh-

I don’t have anything climbable closer than 1.2 metres from the top of
the fence/barrier. (Check over the boundary fence. My neighbour hasn’t inadvertently created a ladder by stacking things against the fence).

Birthday parties are not a competitive event; don’t buy into the idea of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. Truth be told the ‘Joneses’ probably can’t afford everything either. Local charity is walking the talk
A local charity that ensures no student walks to school without shoes is taking big strides – and it’s thanks to the generosity of the community. Walk With Us, a charity set up early last year by eight Nelson businesswomen, helps fund school shoes, sport shoes and socks, for local kids whose families are in need of some financial support. Walk With Us raised $15,000 at a charity auction at the end of October last year, which enabled them to start accepting application forms and get the ball rolling. President Carol Shirley says they were “really excited” with the response from the auction held last year, and the trust was now busy working with its six pilot schools to get shoes on the feet of students who are in need. “We had been told that some students were coming to school with bare feet or wet shoes. There is a big need out there and we keep being told it’s just getting harder and harder financially,” she says. The way the process works is that schools will identify when there is a need and an application form will be sent to the charity. If approved, a voucher goes out to the parents and they then go to sponsors Stirling Sport and Number One Shoe Warehouse to pick out a pair of footwear. “It all goes through the schools, the teacher often sees the need and contacts the parent. We are quite specific about what they get, they are proper school shoes and proper sports shoes.” She says there has been a “good steady flow”

Please make sure you are not one of them. Come home to the family in the same fit state as when you left. • The winds are unpredictable at this time of the year so ensure you keep a look out for change and get back before it occurs. One thing we can be sure of is the winds are likely to be cold. If you get wet the wind chill factor increases enormously. Keep the crew and yourself dry. Wear the appropriate wet weather gear under your lifejacket. Take care this winter, if in doubt… go snow skiing. Quiz world champs here to raise money for Mike The world championship quiz night is here. This Friday night at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms in Richmond, Mike Corkill and his six children will be hoping to crown a new “world champion”. The tongue-in-cheek title of the quiz was penned by Mike’s kids, who are hoping it will go a long way to helping Mike reach his $100,000 fundraising goal for a new pair of lungs. So far the family has raised more than $20,000 for the operation, which he needs to have to live. The operation isn’t funded by

The Nelson region is a great place for people who enjoy the outdoors, but every year Police are involved in a large number of searches for missing people. Some of those searches do not have a happy outcome, but people heading into the outdoors could do more to ensure their own safety. Police strongly advise that everyone who ventures into the outdoors carries a Personal Locator Beacon. It does not matter whether you are doing a day trip or a multi day tramp; it only takes a moment’s inattention for the trip to turn into a life and death situation where you need immediate help. Carrying a beacon can also save hours, if not days, of searching for police and search and rescue volunteers. Here a few tips for using beacons: • Always register your beacon at www. beacons.org.nz. That is a legal requirement. • Only turn the beacon ON when it is an EMERGENCY. Being too tired or having a blister is not a life and death situation. • If you have cell phone coverage - use your cell phone first. • Carry the beacon on your person not in your pack • Once activated don’t move, it is much harder to track a mobile beacon. Most beacons are designed for the aerial to be in a vertical position • Find open ground, away from a bluff or overhang, so that the beacon can find the satellites. • Rescue time can be as quick as 1 or 2 hours or take up to 48 hours, all depending on the weather and your location • If you do activate the beacon accidentally, phone the Rescue Coordination Centre 0508 472269 or 0508 4RCCNZ and advise them that help is not required. They will then instruct you that it is OK to turn off your beacon. Beacons are hired out by the Nelson Locator Beacon Trust for as little as $20 a weekend or $30 for a week from Rollos Outdoor Centre.

It’s just in the early stages now, but the newlyformed Nelson Horse Rescue Trust hopes it can soon rescue unwanted and abused horses around the region. Set up by local woman Felicity Williams last month, the Nelson Horse Rescue Trust is hoping to secure land so it can begin its work. “Once we’ve got the land we’ll be able to start rescuing horses,” she says. “It’s in the very early stages, we just incorporated the trust two weeks ago, but if we can get people on board supporting us then we can get it going as soon as possible.” The scenarios of when a horse will need rescuing include; being mistreated, or when its owner cannot afford to look after it anymore. “A lot of times people get horses but then can’t look after them. They’re not cheap. I guess it started when I
got my kaimanawa, he was wild when I got him, but it’s been a good experience watching a horse go from being wild to tame or from bad to good.” “We want to get them in, rehabilitate them and then re-home them, and the cost of re-homing them will go towards helping more horses.” Felicity says being able to lease some land longterm “would be perfect” to get the trust into its next stage. “We’re sort of looking for ten to 15 acres because we need an acre per horse. Ideally, it’ll be somewhere we can lease so we won’t have to move anytime soon.” Felicity and a silent partner are funding the trust themselves and are welcoming support from potential sponsors. The MTA is governed by a board of directors who meet regularly and the MTA council comprises the board, branch presidents and committee chairs. Wendy Peterson has been recently elected as the MTA President for Nelson after being involved with the Nelson branch committee for around seven years. How to avoid some common party planning mistakes.
Have an 'apple pop' party All you have to do is cut up some apples and insert candy sticks/skewers. Then just dip, dip, coat, coat, and eat. So much fun! Tip: A muffin tin holds the toppings - brown sugar and cinnamon, mini marshmallows, chopped peanuts, chocolate chips etc.

Planning is the key here – refer 1-9! Ask for help and don’t give yourself too much to do during the party. Maybe a family friend or your babysitter can help out on the day? The Nelson Tramping Club will be looking back to when its members wore hob-nailed boots and oil skins and carried heavy canvas packs, when they celebrate the club’s 80th anniversary at St Arnaud next weekend. About 40 of the club’s past and present members will be attending the anniversary at the Alpine Lodge and Lake Rotoiti Community Hall on Saturday and Sunday. Club secretary Pat Holland says they will be holding a dinner at the Lodge on Saturday as well as slides shows and displays covering the club’s history. “Some of the slides and photos are really interesting,” Pat says. “They give a good insight into the club’s history. “The members were hardier back then because they had to be. The carried heavier packs everything is lightweight now.” The club also built a number of huts around the district. They built the original Rocks Hut, which has since been replaced. Pat says 40 trampers went on the club’s first official trip along the Dun Line and around Mt Jenkins in June 1934. The first overnight trip during August 1934 was to Mt Arthur - the walk to Flora Hut taking three hours due to the road end being further down Graham Valley. The club’s most popular annual trip for 50 years was a Christmas trip up to Third House. The trip was advertised nationally at one stage with numbers peaking at 300 in 1969. Pat says he is looking forward to catching up with some of the club’s past-presidents at the anniversary weekend, including Stoke’s

They are also planning some day walks as long as the weather cooperates. The club has a membership of 110 and plans two trips a week, generally ranging from beach strolls to alpine expeditions all around the top half of the South Island.

Commonwealth Games draws closer for Nelson athletes
A record contingent of Nelson athletes will represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, and the countdown to Glasgow is nearly up with the event just over a week away. Cyclist George Bennett has already been ruled out after sustaining an injury in a crash last month, but ten others from Nelson will be wearing the silver fern in Glasgow, some for the first time. The Nelson contingent is; Anita Punt (hockey), Julian Matthews (athletics), Amy Mcilory (lawn bowls), Shannon Mcilroy (lawn bowls), Jo Edwards (lawn bowls), Val Smith (lawn bowls), Bryce Heem (rugby sevens), Shannon Francois (netball), Mark Brewer (judo) and Jack Bauer (cycling). 1500m runner Julian Matthews, a former Nelson College student, will be one of those competing at the Commonwealth Games

Speaking via email from the Athletics NZ athlete's base in Cardiff, Julian says reality has finally sunk in that he will be competing at the Games. “It’s taken a while to sink in, but it has now – I arrived at the Athletics NZ athlete’s base here in Cardiff a couple of days ago and being around all the other team members has made it more of a reality for me. I’m really looking forward to getting my uniform and being able to try on that black singlet, while trying to keep the pressure of the event at bay for a bit longer, of course,” he says. Julian will be targeting a place in the 1500m final and will “see what happens”
from there. “The 1500 is such an exciting race, it really comes down to the day and tactics, you never know what will happen.” Coming from a “very sport-orientated” family, Julian has always dreamt of someday representing New Zealand since picking up athletics as a 13 year old. “To be able to compete at the Commonwealth Games is such an honour – I am so excited to be able to represent my country at an international event, and especially one that is close to so many Kiwis' hearts.” Nelson’s best hopes of a gold medal, outside of the rugby sevens team, lie with veteran bowlers Jo and Val. Jo won a gold medal in the pairs in 2002, while Val finished second in the singles in 2010. The duo, who are good mates off the green, are teaming up in the pairs this year and have a proven track record at international events. The next best prospect is Anita and the
women’s Black Sticks hockey team. Anita, who is one of the most experienced players in the team with 155 caps, has been scoring for fun in recent internationals and was part of the squad which won a silver medal in Dehli. Amy and Shannon have the unique story of being husband and wife, as well as members of the New Zealand lawn bowls team. When she was named in the squad to attend her first Commonwealth Games, Amy said she just wanted to make her family proud. “My biggest thing is definitely doing this for my family, and my mum and dad are coming over to watch.” An eleventh Nelson athlete will compete in the games, but he won’t be wearing a silver fern. Former Makos number eight Mark Bright, now 35 years old, has gained selection in the England rugby sevens team. The Commonwealth Games begin July 23.

Rifle club on target for centenary
The Wood Miniature Rifle Club celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday, and an injection of new members over the past few years should put it on target for 100. Kevin Barton, who has represented New Zealand in small bore rifle shooting and was a member of the club for 35 years, says the club was started by a group of Italians. “They had 11 members at the first meeting but within six months they were up to 44. It was a gentlemen’s sport, now it’s a blue collar sport,” he says. The club, which now has about 20 members and has based near the Trafalgar Centre since the 50s, tends to revolve around the same families, with daughters, sons and

grandchildren following in the footsteps of their relatives. “Several times there have been three generations. Both of my boys were shooting. But there’s definitely quite a few.” While it is an Olympic discipline, the sport still struggles to compete with other more popular codes. “It’s not really a spectatorfriendly sport. Some people often, tell me it’s like watching grass grow, but once you get involved it’s much better and the social aspect is fantastic.” Tania Slinn, who got into shooting through her father and grandfather, says the 90th
anniversary was special for the club, which is the oldest in the region and one of the oldest in the country. “Because we’re such a familyorientated club we’ve got a real closeness, and it’s like a whole other family,” she says. Her brother Dayle Slinn, a three position shooter, competed at the Commonwealth Games twice, and is one of many who have represented New Zealand. Tania says the club was in good hands as it closes in on its 100th anniversary in ten years time. “I don’t think we’ll ever go away and we’re actually starting to grow again as a club. We’ve had a lot of new members in the club, so yeah, we’re definitely on target for the 100.”

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz The Victory Phoenix Vikings are now just two weeks away from their first ever TRL finals appearance — and it’s got the community buzzing. 2014 has been a historic season for the proud Victory club, which is situated in the heartland of Nelson’s rugby league fraternity. The team started the season with their first ever win, a momentous result over the Wairau Taniwha — after going the entire 2013 season without a win. The team has so far recorded wins against every other side except the Wanderers Wolves and the unbeaten Richmond Rabbits. With just two rounds to play in the TRL round robin, Victory are all but confirmed in the semi-finals and coach Andrew Dooley says the hardships of last year are finally paying off. “Last year we didn’t win a game. We didn’t even come close to winning a game. But our boys just showed heart. They turned up every week. We earned our respect,” he says. Last year Victory were restricted to having a squad with 75 per cent of players who were new to the sport, despite the suburb having one of the largest player bases in the region for rugby league. In 2013, many of the residents played for other clubs, but this year, with that restriction lifted, more have joined the Phoenix Vikings. “They’ve all come home and it feels like home. But that was so hard. Out of 20 fullas you needed 15 of them to be new to the sport so you were constantly try-

Just trying to hold your head up was so hard after another 60 point hiding, we had two 100 point hidings last year, but now there’s no way that’d happen.” Andrew says there was a huge “roar” when Victory won it’s opening game of the season. “It was like we had won the competition. It was the monkey off the back and set up for what has become a promising season.” Victory had no true “home games” in its first seasons, but that has finally changed with Nelson Intermediate School allowing the team to use its field. The new home ground, along with a competitive team, is drawing big numbers along to support too, with around

250 often on the sideline. “That’s where I learnt to kick as a kid, I’d go down there with my home-made kicking tee and kick goals at the post, so to be able to now play down there in our own community is such a blessing.” Individuals are also being acknowledged for their efforts on the field. Another first for the club — Caleb Tauwhare and Pene Webber were named in the Tasman Titans training squad, a feat no player from the club has experienced before. Victory will still be underdogs when they take on the Richmond Rabbits in the semi-final in two weeks time and, even if they do lose, it’s safe to say 2014 will go down as the year Victory learnt the meaning of their name.

Waimea to play Wanderers in final

In a replay of last year’s division one rugby final, it’ll be Wanderers and Waimea Old Boys challenging for the title once again. Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers got past Kahurangi 32-9 in Brightwater, while Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys edged Wakatu Marist 15-3 for the first time this season, to book their place in the final at Trafalgar Park this Saturday. The day will be a big occasion for both clubs, who have their Car Company division two teams in the final at 1pm,
before the division one sides meet at 3pm. Waimea Old Boys stunned Wanderers 51-22 in the final last year to win their first title since 2002, but Wanderers have to look right back until 1955 when they last won their championship. Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman believes this weekend they can right their wrongs from last season. “We’ve worked hard and we’re really looking forward to it after how it went down last year,” he says. “Last year we just
weren’t ready, for a few of us it was our first final and we were a bit overawed by the occasion.” Waimea Old Boys captain Ben Coman says his side would not put much bearing on the fact they are defending champions, and he says Wanderers’ record makes them the favourites. “We’re conscious that we’re going into this as underdogs. Wanderers have set the bar pretty high this season and they’ve been the form side of the competition, but we’re excited about the occasion,” he says.
Football club to host 50th anniversary dinner Andrew Board Richmond’s largest sports club is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next month. Richmond Athletic Football Club was founded when two clubs merged and, while its origins are a little hazy, what is known is the year club stalwart Roy Oddy was voted as the club’s first president – 1964. Current president, Stu Reid, is leading the organising efforts for the 50th celebrations and says it will honour its history as a laidback, family-friendly club that has fostered the love of the game for thousands of locals. “Many of us grew up around the clubrooms at Jubilee Park, and
it’s always been a club that has accepted and involved players and supporters of all ages and abilities.” The 50th anniversary will be held on the weekend of August 29 and 30. On Friday night there will be a meet and greet at the clubrooms on Jubilee Park, before a past verses present game on Saturday and a celebration dinner at Club Waimea later that night. Stu says registrations are now open for the celebration dinner, where a guest speaker and live band will entertain after a threecourse meal.
